Donovan's tripped-out psych-rock masterpiece, "Season of the Witch," is a true relic of druggy '60s pop, and a defiant counterpoint to the Scottish singer-songwriter's enduring folk hit from 1965,"Catch the Wind," which he released just prior to talked-about arrest for possession of marijuana. Instead, "Season of the Witch" – featured on his third studio album, Sunshine Superman (1966) – treads a darker, eerie path, summoning a world of paranoia and acid-soaked strangeness ("When I look over my shoulder / What do you think I see? / Some other cat looking over / His shoulder at me / And he's strange, sure is strange.") which has been reincarnated by a number of other artists over the years, including Lana Del Rey – who recorded a cover for the soundtrack to 2019 horror movie Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - as well as popping up in films and on the small screen, notably George Romero's 1973 movie, Season of the Witch.
