"Go Tell It on the Mountain" is an African-American spiritual song with origins likely rooted in West African tradition, carried to the Americas by slaves. The song was first formally compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr., an African-American composer and the first in his community to collect folksongs. The earliest known publication of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" is traced to his collection in the New Jubilee Songs as Sung by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from 1901, although there's debate regarding the original compiler. Its lyrics tell the story of the Nativity of Jesus based on the Gospel of Luke's Annunciation of the Shepherds. Over the years, the song has been adapted and recorded by numerous artists across various genres such as Peter, Paul, and Mary, and country diva Dolly Parton, who infused the popular spiritual with a healthy dash of country twang on her 1990 thirtieth studio album, Home for Christmas.
