One of the best-known and best-loved Black recording artists of the 1950s, self-proclaimed "Queen of the Blues" Dinah Washington – who was a 1986 inductee into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 – scored a hit with her first solo record for Mercury Records, a sultry version of Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'," which sparked a string of other popular singles for the star singer. "Ain't Misbehavin'" was featured on the 1957 album Dinah Washington Sings Fats Waller (reissued by Verve Records in 1990 as The Fats Waller Songbook) and sees Dinah Washington spin a Nursery Rhyme into a jazz standard, "Like Jack Horner in that corner / Don't go nowhere, what do I care? / Your kisses are worth my waitin' for, believe me / I don't stay out late, don't care to go / I'm home about eight, just me and my radio / Ain't misbehavin', just savin' my love for you," she sings, her voice sounding both artful and elegant.
