In 1986, the English electronic music group Depeche Mode released their seminal fifth album, Black Celebration. The album marked a continuation of the group’s moodier, darker sound, which had evolved from a bright and shiny synth-pop outfit from the early 1980s. One of the songs recorded during the album sessions, but not originally included in the tracklist, was “But Not Tonight.” The track was written by Martin Gore and features an upbeat, pop-oriented sound, standing in contrast to the rest of the album’s dark and introspective style. The lyrics are about a person who is feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of daily life and wants to go out and have a good time, even if just for one night, instead of dwelling on their problems. “But Not Tonight” was released as the B-side to the first single from Black Celebration, “Stripped.” However, in America, the song took on a life of its own, becoming wildly popular.
