Def Leppard exploded onto the rock scene in 1977 and joined the vanguard of UK heavy metal titans tearing up the '80s. Released in 1981, "Lady Strange" shows the band at the peak of their powers, a towering statement of strength, confidence, and songwriting prowess rooted in a memorable melody. With hotshot producer Mutt Lange – who had previously worked on AC/DCs Highway to Hell and Back in Black – once again by their side, they pulled off a victorious second studio album with High 'n' Dry, (1981), and "Lady Strange" sits as the seventh track on the LP. High 'n' Dry went to number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 while rising to number 26 in the band's native UK. The album is a significant document of the band's trademark melody-rich hard rock style and power ballad "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" – the LP's second single – is notable for being one of the first rock videos played on MTV in 1982.
