"Who's Johnny" is the debut solo single by El DeBarge. The talented singer struck out on his own from his family band that year but was a little reluctant to record the quirky synth-pop song, which was written for the sci-fi comedy Short Circuit, worrying it might confuse his fans who knew him from his more R&B/pop sound. Songwriter/producer Peter Wolf told Billboard that he wrote the song while still in bed, saying he started thinking about what to write and the whole song, verses and chorus, were instantly just there. He knows a lot about writing hit songs having co-written Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and Starship's "We Built This City." El made the right decision in recording "Who's Johnny." It gave him his only #1 R&B hit as a solo artist.
