"Side by Side" has been interpreted by everyone from Ray Charles and Betty Carter (on the 1961 album Ray Charles and Betty Carter) and Bill Haley & His Comets (1962) to the Duke Ellington Orchestra but "The King of Cool" Dean Martin breathed life into the 1920s jazz standard for his 1966 album Dean Martin Sings Songs from "The Silencers"—a studio album of songs that featured in the Dean Martin-starring film The Silencers—to create one of the definitive versions of the song. "Side by Side" was originally written by Tin Pan Alley songwriter Harry M. Woods who went on to pen a slew of 1920s standards, including "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along)," "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover," and "Try a Little Tenderness" as well as adding his talents to a number of Hollywood musicals. He was famous for composing his songs on the piano, although he was born without fingers on his left hand.
