Australian troubadour Dean Lewis broke through in his native Australia with the 2018 single “Be Alright," which has been certified 11-times platinum as of 2022, and dropped his debut album, A Place We Knew, in 2019. Released in 2022 as one of the singles from his second studio album, "How Do I Say Goodbye" is a heart-wrenching exploration of death and grief from Sydney-born songwriter-songwriter Dean Lewis. "So how do I say goodbye / To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?," he asks in the chorus. "You gave me my name and the colour of your eyes / I see your face when I look at mine / So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?". Dean Lewis wrote the song in Nashville with Jon Hume (who also co-wrote Dean Lewis's track "Hurtless") following his father's cancer diagnosis and after he had been in remission from cancer for six months, with the doctors having given him a 25% chance of living. On the song, he tries to confront the imminent death of his father.
