National treasure David Essex emerged in the early 1960s and by the early 1970s had secured a firm grip on the UK pop landscape, both as a singer-songwriter and actor, making his big-screen debut in the 1973 coming-of-age movie That'll Be the Day the same year as releasing his breakthrough international hit, "Rock On." If "Oh What a Circus" sounds suspiciously familiar to "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," that's because it is; both songs are built from the same composition (except the former is faster and has different lyrics) known as a contrafactum, and appear on the iconic Evita musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. David Essex stepped perfectly into the shoes of Evita protagonist Che for the original London production of the musical, and recorded "Oh What a Circus" as a single for Mercury Records in 1978, reaching number three in the UK and occupying the top 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands.
