Outlaw country icon David Allan Coe built his career and reputation on being a rebel and "Longhaired Redneck" might just be his calling card. "Country DJs knows that I'm an outlaw / They'd never come to see me in this dive / Where bikers stare at cowboys, who are laughing at the hippies / Who are praying they'll get out of here alive," he begins on the title track of his 1976 album, which featured backing vocals from The Nashville Edition and The Jordanaires. David Allan Coe never quite hit the same commercial highs as fellow outlaw country balladeers Waylon Jennings or Willie Nelson, but that was arguably part of his charm. An outsider through and through, he dug his heels in and refused to conform. Written with Texas radio DJ Jimmy Rabbitt, "Longhaired Redneck" is an outlaw country classic that even peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and at number 23 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.
