Over the course of his prolific career, Dale Watson's music has emerged as a beacon of roots-influenced country, a genre the Alabama-born artist himself has described as "Ameripolitan," which has seen him take aim at the poppier, radio-friendly side of the tracks ("A Real Country Song”) to defend the craft of 'real' country. "Feelin' Haggard" arrived nearly three decades after his 1989 debut Is There Something Wrong but retained much of the traditional sound of his previous offerings. Taken from his 2017 joint album with Asleep at the Wheel frontman Ray Benson, Dale & Ray, "Feelin' Haggard" is a fitting tribute to the late, legendary Merle Haggard, who passed away on 6 April 2016 ("His songs we'll sing forever / Never to grow old"). Elsewhere, the pair cemented their friendship with a 10-track collection of numbers such as “Cryin’ to Cryin’ Time Again,” which makes a reference to Buck Owens.
