On this lush pastoral folk idyll, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young doff their hat to the mythological figure of Lady Guinevere: the early-medieval queen of Arthurian legend who was both the wife of King Arthur and lover of Sir Lancelot. In the song, the golden-haired Queen Guinnevere – who is addressed as "m'lady" – represents the object of the protagonist's affection. Songwriter David Crosby later explained that he wrote "Guinnevere" about not one, but three women he had loved during his life, including his longtime girlfriend Christine Hilton who was tragically killed in a car crash, and none other than Joni Mitchell, who he was briefly in a relationship with in 1967 (the Blue icon famously dumped David Crosby via the medium of song). The original version of "Guinevere" was featured on the hit 1969 Crosby, Stills & Nash album, with Neil Young joining the band shortly after and credited on this "Guinnevere" remake, which was first featured on the band's fourth album So Far (1974).
