Released on August 5, 2016, country singer-songwriter Cody Johnson's self-released sixth album Gotta Be Me helped him break into the mainstream with virtually no major label support or widespread radio play. The album's success was largely built on the back of promotional singles "With You I Am" and "Wild as You," both of which were certified Gold in the United States. Written by Jeremy Spillman, Michael Connors, and Trent Willmon, the latter is a touching country ballad about not wanting to change one's romantic partner and accepting them for who they truly are. "Wild as You" was released as the album's second single in 2017 and quickly became one of his most beloved songs, peaking at Number 53 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and reaching the top of the local streaming charts. In 2018, the track was named Single of the Year by Texas Regional Radio while its parent album Gotta Be Me took home the Album of the Year award.
