American musician Chuck Brown and his backing band The Soul Searchers are often credited with pioneering a subgenre of funk music known as go-go. Characterized by a heavy focus on specific rhythm patterns and frequent interactions with live audiences, go-go was developed in the Washington D.C. area during the mid-1960s to late-1970s. Perhaps the finest and most popular example of this particular subgenre was Chuck Brown's 1979 mega-hit "Bustin' Loose," which spent four weeks atop the US R&B charts and earned him the nickname of "Godfather of go-go." Originally written by Chuck Brown in 1976, "Bustin' Loose" is built around a repetitive groove spanning over seven minutes that features a funky bassline, massive horn melodies, and the group's trademark call and response vocals. In the following years, the track was sampled extensively on several hip-hop songs, including Eric B. & Rakim's "Eric B. Made My Day," Public Enemy's "I Ain't Mad at All," and Nelly's "Hot in Herre."
