By the early 1980s, English singer-songwriter Chris Rea had achieved a certain degree of popularity in the United States with singles like "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" (1978), "Diamonds" (1979), and "Loving You" (1982), but had yet to make an impact in the United Kingdom. Subsequent releases like Water Sign (1983), On the Beach (1986), and Dancing with Strangers (1987) helped turn the guitar virtuoso into one of the most popular British artists of the late 1980s with his blues-inflected brand of soft rock music. In 1989, Chris Rea finally reached the top of the UK charts with his fifth album The Road to Hell, a thematically cohesive album that addressed the rising violence and alienation in an increasingly globalized world. Inspired by a conversation with a neighbor, the single "Texas" (1990) depicted an idealized version of the Lone Star State, a place where one could escape the hustle and bustle of modern cities and start life anew. Shortly after its commercial release, "Texas" peaked at Number 60 on the UK Singles Chart.
