English singer-songwriter Chris Rea originally wrote "Driving Home for Christmas" with singer Van Morrison in mind, inspired by a drive with his wife from Abbey Road Studios in London to his home in Middlesbrough during the Christmas season. After failing to get reach the Irish troubadour, he decided to take matters into his own hands and recorded the track in 1986, featuring 1950s Christmas carol-type arrangements that imbued the song with a distinct holiday feel. "Driving Home for Christmas" was released as a B-side to the single "Hello Friend" and, despite its little initial success, it managed to enter the Top 10 in several European countries in the years that followed. In 1988, a re-recorded version of the song was included in Chris Rea's first compilation album New Light Through Old Windows, as well as in The Christmas EP later that year. Almost three decades after its original release, Chris Rea performed the song live for the first time in 2014 at the Hammersmith Odeon.
