"Well - who is the hippie that's happenin' all over our town?/ Tearin' up chicks with the message that he lays down/ Who is the coolest guy, what is, what am? / That's fast-talkin' - slow walkin' - good-lookin' Mohair Sam," begins Charlie Rich on "Mohair Sam." The Arkansas-born singer, songwriter, and musician known as "the Silver Fox" built up a genre-spanning legacy that took in everything from soul, gospel and jazz to rock 'n' roll, and plenty of undiluted country. "Mohair Sam" is a character sketch that draws the song's titular figure from an R&B-touched goofy rock 'n' roll palette. The song was written by Dallas Frazier and became a top 30 pop hit for Charlie Rich who went to number 21 with the single in 1965 (with "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" on the B-side), scoring his only hit during that period. He signed to Epic Records in 1967 and enjoyed a burst of commercial success in the 1970s, winning a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and four Academy of Country Music awards.
