Late country trailblazer Charley Pride climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in March 1982 with "Mountain of Love," a cover of a song written and recorded by Harold Dorman in 1960 which peaked at Number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Charley Pride – who later became one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker), also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000 – joined a lineup of other artists who had put their stamp on the rock 'n' roll soother, including Johnny Rivers – who scored a Top 10 hit for his reimagining of the song that used members of The Wrecking Crew – The Beach Boys (who included the cover on their 1965 album Beach Boys' Party!), Bruce Springsteen (who is prone to covering the song live) and Molly & the Heymakers. When Charley Pride scored a Number 1 hit for his version, it marked his twenty-sixth country chart-topper to date.
