Legendary American singer Charles Bradley, known as the Screaming Eagle of Soul, had seen his share of changes over the course of his life. It’s fitting, then, that his cover of the 1972 Black Sabbath classic, is so heavy with pathos and emotion. Transforming the original song’s stately melancholy into a soulful lament that recalls the work of Otis Redding and Al Green, Charles Bradley fills every line with palpable longing and weathered conviction. The arrangement and deliberately retro orchestration by producer Thomas Brenneck makes the track sound like a long-lost Motown outtake. Initially released as a Record Store Day Black Friday single in 2013, "Changes" became the centerpiece and title track of Charles Bradley’s 2016 album, the last one he would record before passing away the following year. The track (and accompanying album) would go on to become one of the most successful and acclaimed recordings by the singer.
