The origins of the much-covered American song "Big Strong Man" date back to the turn of the 20th century. Originally penned in 1908 and titled "My Brudda Sylvest," with words by Jesse Lasky and Sam Stern and music by Fred Fisher, "Big Strong Man" paints the portrait of the singer's brother Sylvest, with the lyrics changing slightly over the years. In 2023, traditional Irish and Celtic music quartet Ceol threw their hat into the ring and turned in a jaunty cover of the 115-year-old song pulled along by rib-tickling fiddle. "He was my brother Sylvest (shout-What's he got?) / A row of forty medals on his chest (Big Chest!)," they roar with riotous chanting that brings a crowd-pleasing dimension to the song. Ceol have tasked themselves with dusting off traditional music for modern audiences, and "Big Strong Man" certainly breathes new life into an old tune, which has been covered over the years by a cortège of UK folk artists.
