CeCe Winans opened a box of jewels with her 1999 album of contemporary gospel pieces. "Alabaster Box" – which is a Bible reference – was the fourth studio album for the Grammy-winning gospel singer who started her career as a member of the duo BeBe & CeCe Winans, before going solo and releasing her first album in 1995, Alone in His Presence. "Alabaster Box" is carved from a polished arrangement of piano, strings, and woodwinds and opens with a reference to Mary Magdalene's committed belief in the power Jesus Christ, 'pouring praise on Him', "like oil from Mary's alabaster box", as CeCe Winans sings earnestly. Described as a more "experimental" offering than her previous albums, Alabaster Box also marked the debut release for CeCe Winans' own WellSpring Gospel label, through which she put out releases by a slew of other artists including Vicki Yohe, Marcus Cole, Marvin Winans, Delores "Mom" Winans, The Born Again Church Choir, and Alvin Love III.
