Perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable Christmas carols in modern musical history, "O Holy Night" was written by French composer Adolphe Charles Adam in 1847. A heartfelt reflection on Jesus' birth as humanity's redemption, the song was based on a poem titled "Cantique de Noël" by poet Placide Cappeau, who wrote it in 1843 to celebrate the recent renovation of the church organ in the town of Roquemaure. In 1855, American classical music critic John Sullivan Dwight translated "O Holy Night" into English, popularizing the song among abolitionists in the North of the United States. From there on, "O Holy Night" was performed by a plethora of popular music artists, including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and American singer-songwriter Carrie Underwood, who first recorded in 2009 for her Christmas album Carnival Ride: Holiday Edition, reaching Number 39 on the country music charts. An orchestral version of "O Holy Night" was also included in her 2020 album My Gift.
