As a rockabilly revivalist known for breathing new life into the retro sound with The Stray Cats during the 1980s, Brian Setzer has always had one foot in the musical past. In 1987, he dropped into Ritchie Valens' biopic La Bamba as Eddie Cochran and in the early 1990s, tried on a new era for size with his swing revival and jump blues band, the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Written by composer Dimitri Tiomkin and lyricist Ned Washington (and originally recorded by Gene Pitney for the harrowing 1961 film of the same title), "Town Without Pity" is one of the big band bops to emerge from his fertile period of recording with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. The song was featured on their 1996 album Guitar Slinger, a 12-track collection of horn-laden orchestral arrangements featuring a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "The House Is Rockin'" and two collaborations with Joe Strummer of the Clash on "Ghost Radio" and "Sammy Davis City."
