This stripped-back, warts-and-all depiction of the 2009 hard-rock ballad from Pennsylvania rockers Breaking Benjamin shows the band in a more vulnerable new light. Written by Benjamin Burnley as the title track for the group's fourth studio album, "Dear Agony (Aurora version)" was recorded 11 years later as part of Breaking Benjamin's acoustic album Aurora (2020). This new version of the song, which embodies Breaking Benjamin's signature sound in an intimate, acoustic setting, incorporates the delicate vocals of Lacey Sturm, the former lead singer of Flyleaf. Meanwhile, the lyrics of "Dear Agony (Aurora version)" don't veer from the original track's unflinching exploration of alcohol addiction, as newly sober lead singer Benjamin Burnley gets to grips with his "faceless enemy" and asks to be 'let go.' "Leave me alone / God, let me go / I'm blue and cold / Black sky will burn," he sings agonisingly in the bridge.
