"You sheltered me from harm / Kept me warm, kept me warm / You gave my life to me," begins David Gates in his distinctive falsetto on this cut from Bread's gold-certified 1972 album Baby I'm-a Want You, which was the first Bread album to feature keyboard player Larry Knechtel. Long before Google dictated the viability of choosing a band name, soft-rock maestros Bread were busy baking a batch of classics, including this stirring tribute to David Gates's late father who died in 1963. "I would give anything I own / Would give up my life, my heart, my home / I would give everything I own / Just to have you back again," he lovingly declares in the chorus of "Everything I Own." The track zoomed to number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 while also making it to number five in Canada and number one in the Philippines. Jamaican artist Ken Boothe and George Michael and both went to number one in the UK in 1974 and 1987, respectively, with reworks of the song.
