Such was the case for American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, who offered a detailed account of her rocky ascent to fame on her 2021 autobiography, Broken Horses: A Memoir. "Broken Horses" was also the title of the fourth track on her seventh studio album In These Silent Days, released that same year to great critical acclaim. Written by Brandi Carlile with Phil and Tim Hanseroth, and produced by Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings, "Broken Horses" is a cathartic country rock track in which she exorcised years of repressed anger stemming from her dysfunctional upbringing. The song reached Number 8 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart and won Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
