Brad Paisley came up with “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song)” while preparing for a student concert at Nashville’s Belmont University. He had mostly sung ballads but thought he might try something that would make them laugh. He and fellow student Frank Rogers wrote about a guy whose wife gives him an ultimatum to choose between her or fishing. “Today she met me at the door / Said I would have to choose / If I hit that fishin' hole today / She'd be packin' all her things / And she'd be gone by noon” When Paisley hit the punchline chorus of “Well, I’m gonna miss her” the crowd went wild, laughing and cheering. Although Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and George Strait all expressed interest in recording it, Paisley kept it for himself and included it on 2002’s Part II.
