One of the oldest and most popular songs in the holiday canon, the Scots-language poem "Auld Lang Syne" was originally written by Robert Burns in 1788 and was set to a standard piece of music over a decade later. Even though it is primarily sung as a way to bid farewell to the old year during New Year's Eve, "Auld Lang Syne" is also performed in any ceremony or congregation that might mark the ending of something, such as funerals, graduations, and even Boy Scout events. Since its inception in the 18th century, the tune has served as an inspiration to numerous folk songs throughout the globe and has been translated into several languages. In 1987, producer Frank Farian and his protégés, the dance-pop group Boney M., turned the solemn holiday anthem into a Euro-disco banger that appeared on their Christmas album The 20 Greatest Christmas Songs alongside other classics such as "Jingle Bells" and "Silent Night, Holy Night."
