It's all rhythm, groove, synthesizers, and plain sailing on Bobby Caldwell's smooth-jazz roller, "Don't Ask My Neighbor," the third track from the New York-born artist's 1995 album Soul Survivor. Taking its lead from the mellowed-out R&B gem recorded by The Emotions in 1977, "Don't Ask My Neighbors," – which was originally composed by Skip Scarborough and produced by EWF bandleader Maurice White – Bobby Caldwell readjusted the lyrics ever so slightly to remove the multi-vocal harmonies, and jazzed up the instrumentation to create his own glossier offering. Although it never quite reached the highs of his 1978 breakout hit and calling card, "What You Won't Do For Love” – which was pressed into a heart-shaped 7" single especially for Valentine's Day – Soul Survivor still soared to Number 6 on the Jazz Albums chart and Number 23 on the R&B chart.
