Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley closed out his 1976 commercial heavy-hitter Rastaman Vibration—his most successful album in the US, becoming his first LP to dent the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 chart (peaking at number eight)—with this anti-capitalist meditation on the pitfalls of the western world. Released just a year after the smash-hit live version of "No Woman, No Cry," recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, and mixed in Miami by bass player Aston Barrett and Island Records head honcho Chris Blackwell, the synthesizer-enriched Rastaman Vibration was rooted in sociopolitical and philosophical observances and statements. Album standout "War"—which directly lifted speech made by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I before the United Nations General Assembly on 4 October 1963—and "Rat Race," were among the highlights, tracks that almost seem at odds with the album's commercial appeal but that remind of Bob Marley's world-conquering reach.
