The US comedian and musician born Robert Pickering "Bo" Burnham blew up on YouTube in the late 2000s and went on to amass four comedy music albums, including 2021's Inside (The Songs), a soundtrack LP for the COVID-19-era film of the same name that confronted serious topics such as mental health, climate change, and social justice. "1985” is one of the two previously unheard songs from the 2021 Netflix special Bo Burnham: Inside, appearing on the one-year anniversary of the special in 2022, The Inside Outtakes, via YouTube. The soundtrack for the outtakes was then released in June 2022 with the special following on Netflix the next month.
