Written by Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn, "TV Party" critiques American suburban culture through mock-celebration of TV addiction, drinking beer, and avoiding responsibility. With its upbeat tempo, chant-along chorus, and intentionally goofy delivery, TV Party stands out in the Black Flag catalog for its irony and humor, contrasting the band’s usual rage and aggression. This satirical punk anthem was first released in 1981 on the TV Party EP and later re-recorded for the band's landmark 1984 album Damaged. Vocalist Henry Rollins, new to the band at the time, delivers the lyrics with exaggerated enthusiasm, name-checking popular shows like Dallas, CHiPs, and Hill Street Blues to drive home the absurdity. Though playful on the surface, TV Party reflects Black Flag’s deeper commentary on conformity, apathy, and consumerism in Reagan-era America. Its enduring popularity led to appearances in pop culture, including the 1984 film Repo Man.
