Even though they hit their stride in the early 2000s, Canadian punk rockers Billy Talent had been a mainstay of Toronto's thriving indie music scene since 1993. Formed during a high school talent contest, the band began performing under the name Pezz until a legal dispute made them change it near the turn of the century. With a fresh new identity and a more aggressive, punk-oriented approach, Billy Talent broke into the mainstream with their 2003 self-titled studio debut, which climbed to Number 6 on Billboard Canada's Albums Chart. In 2006, their sophomore album Billy Talent II became their first Number 1 record on the Canadian charts thanks to singles like "Devil in a Midnight Mass," "Red Flag," and "Fallen Leaves." Written by the band and produced by Gavin Brown, the latter is a cautionary tale about a man who travels to the Downtown Eastside district of Vancouver and becomes a heroin addict, losing all of his friends in the process. Shortly after its commercial release, "Fallen Leaves" reached Number 22 on the Canadian Hot 100 and Number 2 on the Canadian rock charts.
