"(In My) Solitude" is a popular jazz standard, with an iconic 1956 recording by singer Billie Holiday. Originally written by Duke Ellington in 1934, the song was reportedly crafted in a mere 20 minutes within a recording studio, a testament to Duke Ellington's spontaneous brilliance. It also features lyrics penned by Eddie DeLange and Irving Mills. In time, the track achieved a high degree of popularity and established itself as a jazz standard. While initially recorded by Duke Ellington himself, it was Billie Holiday's soulful renditions in the 1940s and 1950s that added a hauntingly beautiful layer to it. Especially the 1956 version, recorded as part of Billie Holiday's album Solitude (1956). Billie Holiday's voice, acclaimed for its ability to convey world-weary emotion and vulnerability, paired perfectly with the emotional weight of the lyrics and the song's somber tone. This union of song and singer was so profound that one of her renditions was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2021.
