Some of the greatest, most poignant love songs in modern history have been born out of desperate and painful situations. Such is the case of "I'd Rather Go Blind," a slow-burning blues and soul classic that began life sometime in the late 60s when musician Ellington "Fugi" Jordan spent time behind bars. Frustrated and depressed, Ellington Jordan took to songwriting, outlining the basic structure of the song while still in prison. Shortly after, he showed it to his friend, singer Etta James, who finished writing the song and recorded it in 1967. A tale of longing and lament, "I'd Rather Go Blind" broke into the Top 10 of Billboard's R&B charts and went on to become one of Etta James' best-known songs. In later years, it was covered by several artists such as Rod Stewart, B. B. King, and Paul Weller. In 2008, Beyoncé, who delivered a stellar performance as Etta James on the biographical drama Cadillac Records, recorded a passionate rendition of the song for the film's soundtrack, Cadillac Records: Music From the Motion Picture.
