One of the great things about the songs in the Great American Songbook is that they’re so universal that they can be sung by anyone in just about any type of context without losing their impact. P.S. I Love You,” a standard from 1934 with music by Gordon Jenkins and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, is one of those songs. Originally recorded by Rudy Vallée and released by RCA Victor, the song has been covered by countless performers over the years. In 1991, American singer and actress Bette Midler recorded the song for the film For the Boys, which tells the story of 1940s actress Dixie Leonard. The film was directed by Mark Rydell. In the film’s memorable scene, Dixie Leonard is performing at a show for the US troops. When the lights go out, the troops use their flashlights to illuminate the stage, where Bette Midler / Dixie Leonard performs a slow jazz rendition of the song to audience acclaim. The film’s version of the song features rhythmic arrangements by Dave Grusin and string arrangements by Arif Mardin.
