Ten years before Destiny's Child had claimed "Say My Name" as their own, and the cast of Beetlejuice were learning the words to this show tune from Tim Burton's ghoulish blockbuster. The 1988 fantasy-comedy sees a recently deceased couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) haunt their home with hilariously shocking consequences. "Say My Name" soundtracks a key point in the plot when we are introduced to the main protagonist, Betelgeuse (Alex Brightman) who finds Lydia (Sophia Anne Caruso) about to jump off the roof. He tries to win over her friendship using manipulative tactics ("Hold up! Hold up, girl! / I'm your pal / They're sweet, but I'm a demon straight from Hell /I know, I went a little hard on the sell"). In spite of its ghostly content, Beetlejuice remains an enduring family favourite, having picked up the Academy Award for Best Makeup as well as three Saturn Awards: Best Horror Film, Best Makeup, and Best Supporting Actress for Sylvia Sidney.
