"Benny and the Jets" (sometimes spelled as "Bennie and the Jets") is an iconic track from Elton John's 1973 album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Featuring music by Elton John and words by Bernie Taupin, the song depicts a fictional band during the heyday of glam rock, also acting as a biting satire to the hedonistic music scene of the 1970s. The song was released as a single on February 4, 1974, and quickly became a massive hit in the United States, reaching Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving double-platinum certification for sales of over 2 million copies. In 1995, the eclectic hip-hop trio Beastie Boys released a cover version of "Benny and the Jets" in the second issue of their Grand Royal magazine. While faithful to the original instrumentation, the Beastie Boys' rendition is sung by rapper and collaborator Biz Markie, who mumbles parts of the lyrics. Their take on the Elton John classic was later included in 1999's Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science, a compilation of greatest hits, B-sides, and previously unreleased tracks.
