"Butterflies" is an intertextual riot by GAYLE from the hit Barbie soundtrack. The song frenetically interpolates Crazy Town's 2000 single "Butterfly" (which, while we're here, also happens to sample Red Hot Chili Peppers' instrumental track "Pretty Little Ditty") while the "ABCDEFU" hit-maker swoops in with a driving pop-punk intro and an in-your-face nu-metal snarl. It's certainly a far cry from Dua Lipa's disco-pop turn, "Dance the Night," or Billie Eilish's poignant weepie, "What Was I Made For?", that's for sure. Produced by Mark Ronson and released in July 2023, Barbie: The Album—the soundtrack to Greta Gerwig's 2023 blockbuster office smash—takes a star-studded walk down the red carpet with Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Charli XCX, Sam Smith, and Haim all turning up as contributors. The album went to number two on the US Billboard 200 and cracked the top ten in multiple countries worldwide.
