With its frosting of sleigh bells interpolating traditional English nursery rhyme "Ring-a-Ring-O'-Roses," and its candied disco-funk bassline, "Schoolboy Crush" is featured on Average White Band's 1975 album, Cut the Cake, which was nominated for a Grammy and was the follow-up to the Scottish funk group's acclaimed 1974 album AWB. The LP yielded a Top Ten hit with its title track as well as two other singles. Featuring falsetto vocals and a gold-plated groove that made it ripe for sampling, Average White Band – originally comprising singer/bassist Alan Gorrie, tenor saxophonist Malcolm "Molly" Duncan, guitarists Hamish Stuart and Owen "Onnie" McIntyre, keyboardist/saxophonist Roger Ball, drummer Robbie McIntosh – saw "Schoolboy Crush" sampled by over 150 artists, particularly by those in the hip-hop community, including Eric B. & Rakim, TLC, Nas, Lord Finesse, Mobb Deep, Diana King, Onyx and many many more.
