Western swing heroes Asleep at the Wheel have been feeding the appetite for classic country party corkers since forming in Paw Paw, West Virginia in 1970. Steered by the talents of frontman Ray Benson – the band's only constant member since the beginning – the group notched up a healthy store of albums and hits, from 1973 debut LP Comin' Right at Ya to 1995's The Wheel Keeps on Rollin', their 13th studio album on which this carefree barnstormer is included. This cover of "Lay Down Sally", originally performed by Eric Clapton for his 1977 album Slowhand, and written by Eric Clapton, Marcy Levy, and George Terry, gave the group a footing on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada, where it peaked at number 70, but its enduring popularity as a go-to crossover favourite is priceless. And the wheel really has kept on rolling; Asleep at the Wheel celebrated their golden anniversary in 2021 with Half a Hundred Years.
