"Break Free" is a song by American singer Ariana Grande with Russian-German producer Zedd. Born from a chance encounter at a Universal showcase, the track marked Grande's first foray into electronic dance music. It was written by Savan Kotecha, Zedd, and Max Martin, with the latter two handling production duties. Included in her second studio album, Me Everything, "Break Free" premiered in July 2014 on the show Total Ariana Live, a revival of MTV's Total Request Live. After being announced as the album's second single, the EDM track shot straight to the top of the Billboard US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Ariana Grande's third consecutive single from the album to land on the Top 10 of the Hot 100 after the Iggy Azalea collaboration "Problem" and "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Nicky Minaj. A sci-fi-inspired accompanying video appeared shortly after and racked up over a billion views on video-streaming services.
