Aqua's 1997 bubblegum pop juggernaut was given a fresh lick of paint in 2023 when it became part of the Barbie-powered cultural phenomenon unleashed by Greta Gerwig's record-breaking movie of the same name. The contentious track (more on that shortly) was sampled by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s Top 10 hit Barbie World,” one of the highest-peaking numbers from the star-packed Barbie soundtrack, which featured momentous cuts from Dua Lipa (Dance the Night), Karol G (Watati"), Billie Eilish, ("What Was I Made For?") and others. Aqua made a splash with their catchy late 1990s Europop parody that everyone (mainly rock fans) loved to hate. However, the song drew the ire of Barbie creators Mattel, who were particularly irked by its allegedly sexed-up depictions of Barbie and Ken. This started an infamous legal dispute (Mattel, Inc. v. MCA Records, Inc.) that ultimately ended in Aqua's favour. 25 years later, Mattel licensed the song for use in Barbie.
