It is not uncommon for songs to gain new life and popularity after being recorded by a different artist. Such is the case of "You Could Have Been a Lady," originally released as a non-album single by British sould Band in 1971. Written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson in 1969, the track's melodic vocal line bears an uncanny resemblance to Eddie Harris' "Why Don't You Quit," although the band never publicly acknowledged this. Shortly after its release as a single, "You Could Have Been a Lady" hit Number 22 on the UK Singles Chart for 9 consecutive weeks. In 1972, the song made the jump across the pond and enjoyed great success in North America after it was covered by Canadian rock band April Wine. Boasting heavier production values that emphasized electric guitars and increased the tempo, April Wine's version was included in their 1972 album, On Record, and became their first hit by reaching Number 2 on the RPM 100 and Number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
