Written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson in 1969, the track's melodic vocal line bears an uncanny resemblance to Eddie Harris' "Why Don't You Quit," although the band never publicly acknowledged this. Shortly after its release as a single, "You Could Have Been a Lady" hit Number 22 on the UK Singles Chart for 9 consecutive weeks.
