There is something to be said for art as a way to process grief: whether you've lost a loved one or are in the middle of a turbulent breakup, putting the creative juices to work has been proven to help with emotional pain. Such was the case of Mattie Jackson Selecman, the daughter of singer-songwriter and Country Music Hall of Famer Alan Jackson, who lost her husband due to a traumatic brain injury just 11 months into their marriage. Moved by this devastating loss, Jackson Selecman reached out to her father to help her turn a set of lyrics she had written into a fully-fledged song. The result was "Racing the Dark," a touching country ballad about moving on after a life-changing event. The track was released as a single in November 2021 in conjunction with Jackson Selecman's first book Lemons on Friday, in which she shared her journey from grief to acceptance. Even though it was Jackson's first musical collaboration with his daughter, family has always been present in his repertoire, most notably on songs like "You’ll Always Be My Baby" and "I Do," both written for his daughters' weddings.
