American country rock band Alabama recorded one of the definitive Southern Christmas songs with their 1982 hit “Christmas in Dixie,” a country ballad about the oft-overlooked area in the US that doesn’t usually get a lot of attention during Christmas (or, at the very least, in Christmas songs). The song was written by Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry, Mark Herndon, and Randy Owen. It was produced by the band along with producer Harold Shedd and was originally released as part of the RCA Nashville compilation album A Country Christmas. “Christmas in Dixie” was released as a single and was a huge success, peaking at Number 35 on the US Billboard Hot Country charts, though it re-entered the charts several times over the following decades due to its popularity around Christmastime. It was also included as part of Alabama’s first Christmas album, Alabama Christmas, released in 1985. With time, the song has become a standard and has been included in various Christmas compilations (of the country variety or otherwise).
