Evoking the fantastical American phenomomen of renaissance fairs, Aerosmith travel back in time to a medieval land of lords, maidens and guillotines. "Long ago in days untold / Were ruled by Lords of greed / Maidens fared with gold / They dared to bare their wombs that bleed," begins Steven Tyler on Aerosmith's 1977 odyssey, "Kings and Queens." Released as the second single from the rock titans' fifth studio album, Draw the Line (1977), "Kings and Queens" was written by Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and their producer Jack Douglas, who oversaw a number of songs on Draw the Line owing to the band's chaotic state at the time. It serves as a meditation on the warmongering bloodiness of the medieval age while stylistically drawing on elements of '70s stadium rock, mandolin-infused folk (played by Jack Douglas), and heavy metal. The song was also used as a B-side to Aerosmith's version of The Beatles' "Come Together," released in 1978.
