Swedish pop juggernauts ABBA have always had a knack for contrast, pairing melancholic break-up themes with dancefloor-ready instrumentals. Such is the case of "Should I Laugh or Cry," a bitter reflection on a failing relationship backed up by a funky, disco-tinged beat and intricate vocal harmonies. Written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the song features Anni-Frid Lyngstad as a mostly apathetic narrator listing all of her lover's shortcomings and trying to navigate an already insurmountable situation. Considered by fans as one of ABBA's most popular deep cuts, "Should I Laugh or Cry" was recorded during the sessions for their eighth studio album The Visitors (1981) but didn't make the cut. It was later released as a B-side to the 1981 singles "One of Us" and "When All Is Said and Done," and then included as a bonus track on the 2001 re-mastered reissue of The Visitors. It was also featured on the 1983 compilation Thank You for the Music.
