Southern rock legends 38 Special – formed by Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes in 1974 – envisioned their "Fantasy Girl" as a red-hot single in 1981 and served up a rock 'n' roll delight. "In my mind's eye / I see clearly a vision of how it could be / Me and my fantasy girl / Hold on to me / Be my fantasy girl / Don't set me free," they sing in the chorus. One of the more underrated songs in their back catalogue, "Fantasy Girl" leaned into their good time aesthetic and ladled on the southern-fried charm. It featured on Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, the band's fourth studio album, which was released in January 1981. But "Fantasy Girl" was just the start for this merry group of Florida rockers – they went on to notch up over 20 million in record sales and hit the jackpot with their bank of arena-rock favourites, including "You Keep Runnin' Away" (1982) If I’d Been the One,” and Back Where You Belong,” (1983), Second Chance" (1989) and more.
