2Pac wasn't taking any prisoners on this brutal, era-defining diss track from 1996, a bastion of gangsta rap and a lightning rod for the Death Row vs Bad Boy Records battle and wider East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry of the 1990s. With the assistance of his hip-hop crew The Outlawz (formerly known as Outlaw Immortalz), 2Pac tears his opponents (chiefly the Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, and Mobb Deep) to shreds, throwing fuel onto the fire by referencing the rumour of his sexual relationship with Faith Evans, Biggie's wife. "Hi 'Em Up," which was produced by 2Pac's regular collaborator Johnny "J", also spawned a video famous for its flagrant impersonations of Biggie, Puffy and Lil' Kim. The corrosive track ultimately led to the deaths of its creator, 2Pac—just three months after the song's release—and Biggie Smalls, who were both killed in drive-by shootings. "Hit 'Em Up" was originally featured as the B-side on 2Pac's 1996 single "How Do U Want It."
